Higham introduced him to the fundamentals of painting—from color mixing and brushwork to palette knife techniques—and a high school art teacher further nurtured his growing talent. Krane later studied architecture at Arizona State University, where courses in drawing, watercolor, gouache, and design sharpened his visual sensibility. Although his professional career ultimately led him into construction engineering, first in Southern California and later in Northern California after 1974, painting remained a constant creative pursuit. Following his retirement, he renewed his formal study at Diablo Valley College and devoted himself to painting, drawing inspiration from a lifetime of travel and observation. California, Europe, and the American West became enduring subjects, along with Native American culture, horses, working people, seascapes, and the landscapes that shaped his life.

Krane developed a distinctive artistic language that bridges contemporary Impressionism and expressive Modernism. Rather than documenting a place with photographic precision, he sought to capture its atmosphere, rhythm, and emotional character through luminous color, painterly brushwork, and subtly simplified forms. His compositions blend the immediacy of plein-air observation with the structural sensibility of an architect. Influenced by the traditions of American Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, his paintings emphasize mood over exactitude, transforming familiar streets, villages, harbors, and Western landscapes into lyrical meditations on memory and place. Over his lifetime, he painted images of San Francisco, Mt. Diablo, Napa Wine Country, New York and Paris.

View All _|_ View Available _|_ View Sold

Walter Krane

Entitled Saint Francis Hotel, this 2010 oil on canvas San Francisco scene is by the artist Walter Krane (1938-2021).
