Jean (Hans) Arp was a French-German artist and poet known as a founding member of Dadaism. His abstract collages, paintings, and sculptures of organic forms were motivated by an interest in harnessing unconscious thought and parodying established ideas. Arp's burgeoning career as an artist began in Munich in the 1910s, where he was involved with the famed Der Blaue Reiter group and artists such as Wassily Kandinsky. To avoid conscription into the German army in World War I, he fled to Zurich where he became engrossed in a new milieu of avant-garde artists. Here, Arp befriended Hugo Ball and participated in the famous Cabaret Voltaire, an anarchist artistic night club, that became the stage for the birth of Dadaism. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
