Thomas Akawie
This mid 20th century encaustic on wood abstract is by California artist Thomas Frank Akawie (1935-2019). Akawie was a prominent Post-War California artist and a pioneer of airbrush painting, renowned for his diverse body of work that spanned abstraction, Magic Realism, and Photo Realism. Born in New York City, Akawie pursued his artistic education at Los Angeles City College and the University of California, Berkeley, earning a B.A. in Art History in 1959 and a M.A. in 1963.
Akawie's art has been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum, the Whitney Museum in New York, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Milwaukee Art Center, the DeYoung Memorial Museum in San Francisco, the Denver Art Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He has also shown his work in numerous fine art galleries in Los Angeles, Berkeley, and San Francisco, and his pieces are included in many private collections
