Joseph Cook

A native of Los Angeles, Joseph "J" Cook began his artistic journey at an early age and graduated from Santa Monica High School. While still in high school, he received an introductory scholarship to the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, followed by a full scholarship to the Otis Art Institute. After one year, Cook transferred to the Chouinard Art Institute of Los Angeles, where he studied for two years.

In the 20th Mid Century, Cook established two commercial galleries under the name "The J. Cook Gallery" in Los Angeles. His work was also displayed in prominent institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Oakland Art Museum, and the Laguna Art Museum, among many others. In 1968, he won the top award from the National Watercolor Society.

In 1992, Cook relocated to the Monterey Peninsula, where he established a studio in Sand City, California.

In the Fall of 2025, we are proud to present the formal debut of Joseph Cook’s work and story, a tribute to the artist who was widely known simply as "J."
