San Francisco Night Scene
Mid Century Lithograph

#C9617

Stanley Koppel

This mid 20th century lithograph on paper San Francisco scene is signed by the artist, Stanley Koppel, in the lower right. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, San Francisco became a major center for liberal and leftist artists. In 1945 the California Labor School was founded in San Francisco. It offered a wide range of art classes to working people and returning war veterans. During the height of McCarthyism (1948) the school was forced to shut down because some members of faculty were Communist. In 1952, however, a cooperative school, the Graphic Arts Workshop, was formed to continue the work of its predecessor. Its founding members included Stanley Koppel, Pele DeLappe, Irving Fromer, Frank Rowe, Louise Gilbert, Victor Arnautoff and others. The Graphic Arts Workshop exists to this day and its principal mandate continues to be to produce socially significant art. A fine painter and printmaker, Stanley Koppel exhibited his art in San Francisco and other California cities from around 1945 to 1970. In September of 1959 an etching of Koppel's, entitled, Men Drinking at a Bar, was presented to Nikita Khrushchev during his historic visit to the United States. Lonesome Sunday was created by the artist around this time and clearly shows his power of depicting social and urban issues.
