Dancer in a Pink Dress
1998 Oil

C6746

Carlyn Beckman-Friedman

This oil on canvas is by Carlyn Beckman-Friedman (1934-2005). Beckman-Friedman was a Washington D.C. painter known for her Mystic Realist style heavily influenced by Impressionist principles. She trained at the Yudidsky School of Art, Corcoran School of Art, Maryland University, and George Washington University, as well as in Tuscany, Italy. Carlyn was a charter member of the American Institute of Graphic Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Her primary subjects were nature and human figures. For nature, Carlyn employed oil pastels, pen and ink drawings, and watercolor pencils, capturing the delicate balance of the natural world. For her depictions of people, she used textured acrylics and watercolor-style ink washes, often blending human forms with flowing, dynamic movement.

Carlyn’s early dance training influenced the large, fluid movements in her paintings. Over a 40-year career, she worked as a studio artist, publications designer, art therapist, and teacher. One of the first women in commercial art, she later opened her own studio-gallery in Washington, D.C. in 1977.
