Next ArtTalk & Show - NEW YORK, NEW YORK: How The City Created a New American Avant-Garde. Thursday. November 12th at 6pm

Salon co-founder Rob Delamater presents a new ArtTalk exploring mid-century New York at the moment it became the center of the modern art world—and how its influential art schools, groundbreaking teachers, and creative class helped transform a generation of young American artists into the new avant-garde. The talk will be accompanied by a special exhibition highlighting four artists shaped by the schools, ideas, and energy of America’s newly crowned art capital: Joseph DeMartis (1926–1996), Bill Paskewitz (1953–2014), Shirley Plaut Schaefer (1920–2017), and James Southard (1912–2007). Through their work and stories, we’ll look beyond the famous names of the New York School to discover how the city’s radical ideas traveled through its classrooms—and into the work of artists across America.
