Morning Glory
1980's Watercolor

#C8168

Marie Jaans Hibbits

Entitled Morning Glory, this 1980's watercolor on handmade paper botanical painting is by Belgian-American artist Marie Jaans Hibbits (1895-1984). Jaans work reflects both her European roots and American influences. Born in Belgium, Jaans immigrated to the United States in 1923, arriving at Ellis Island aboard the Belgenland from Antwerp. Upon arrival, she listed her nationality as French-German and her residence as Brussels. She went on to study at the Labaudt School of San Francisco, where she honed her artistic skills.

Jaans’s artwork is featured in the permanent collection of the Long Beach Museum of Art. In the 1960s, she exhibited her work with notable galleries, including the Gallery de Silva in Santa Barbara and the Robert Pyle Gallery in Morro Bay. Married to fellow artist Forrest Hibbits, her art was a unique blend of European sensibilities and American modernism.
