This mid 20th century abstracted watercolor on paper landscape is by Dutch-Californian Expressionist Richard Van Wingerden (1893-1969). A WPA artist, Van Wingerden studied with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York and with Benjamin Bufano and Spencer Macky at the Mary Hopkins Institute of San Francisco. Van was a political activist as a member of I.W.W. and the Debs party. In the 1960s, Van was part of the Sausalito Teahouse Group with Ross and Eileen Curtis in Marin. The group used an early 1900s Japanese Teahouse as a studio and exhibition space.
